Racism 101: White Privilege: Sight Unseen →
racismschool: The biggest problem (I believe) with White Privilege is that white people are born with it so they never have to acknowledge it as a “Thing.” There was never a day when they didn’t have it. They never had to live without it and then wake up one day to see a package of white privilege in the mail. An excellent post. I definitely recommend reading the entire thing.

Ally: The Basics
For my family and friends who may read this and not know what an ally is, it means a person who is not a part of a minority community, whether racial, sexual orientation, queer, transgender, and so forth, but is an ally in achieving the human rights that that community deserves. (If I have that definition wrong, please let me know.) racismschool: Only make a mistake once-I don’t mean you only...

a bright wall in a dark room.: Mission Impossible:... →
brightwalldarkroom: by Edward Montgomery Impossible Nostalgia, or What was it that was written above the gates of Hell? “Surrender hope, all ye who enter here,” or some variation thereof? Anyway, I just thought I’d toss a warning your way—your eyeballs will bleed, and it’ll be a while before we… A fantastic essay on what heroism means.

write-handed: Poetry is more than shiny words or phrases, more than line breaks, rhymes, or s p a c e s. It breathes and sings and hangs from strings tied neatly to   our     secret         places. Well said, write-handed, well said.

Racism 101: Cleopatra →
racismschool: What I learned in school about Cleopatra: Lived in Egypt. She was black-This one was interesting. I was in class when my teacher pulled down the map to point to Egypt. Truly…it never occurred to me that Egypt was in Africa. Why would it? Elizabeth Taylor was clearly not an African woman, right? I must have known but…I clearly never thought about it because I said, out loud “Egypt...

It's Black History Month
And the thought that immediately comes to my mind is that I don’t know enough about Black history — which is really just History (American history and World history) that’s been marginalized (like Hispanic history, Asian history, etc.) — other than the obvious few that made it into high school history classes. I realize that I don’t read enough books by Black...

Komen cuts grants for Planned Parenthood cancer...
wilwheaton: laughterkey: jessicavalenti: I’m sure that most folks know by now that Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a breast cancer charity and advocacy organization, announced that they were cutting funding to Planned Parenthood for cancer screenings. In the last five years, the money from Komen allowed PP to providealmost 170,000 breast exams and 6,400 mammogram referrals.  As I said in...

Hook
Everything has rhythm. The slap of the too blue sea against the hull. The clink of the rigging, the straining groan of the lines. The rumpling of the sails, straining to catch the wind. The gruff huffing of his men being men. All keeping time with the tick tock of the alligator’s tail, flicking at the water below. On days like this, when the sun is warm on his shoulder and the sea sparkles,...
